    Power Steering Pump

I have a 64 with power steering, and recently decided to rebuild the pump. I ordered the pump rebuilding kit, and the front seal is larger in OD as well as Larger in ID than the one I took out of the old pump. I went to the local parts store and picked up a rebuilt pump. It has the same size seal as was included in the rebuild kit. It is also configured slightly differently than the old pump, as can be seen in the linked photo below. I am pretty sure that the old pump was original to my car, and it has the same casting numbers as the rebuilding sample in my 63 copy of the factory service manual.
My question is: Where can I get the smaller diameter seal so that I can rebuild my old pump? If the old pump is not correct for my car, what is it from, and should I just use the rebuilt unit?

Last but not least- where can I get the internal filter for this power steering pump?

    Thanks,

    Shane

You're right; the power steering pump that you have IS likely original to your car. 1963 to 1966 Corvettes used a different power steering pump shaft and different shaft seal than 67-74 pumps. 1975-82 pumps used a different shaft, but the same seal as 67-74.

The seal which you need was GM #5688020, but it's been discontinued for quite awhile. You may be able to get a seal like it from an industrial bearing/seal supplier like King Bearing. Or, you may be able to get a power steering pump rebuild kit from an auto supply store. Just make sure that it's a kit specifically for the pre-66 style pump. I'm sure that automotive rebuilders have access to these seals, since I'm pretty sure that they don't just discard the pre-67 cores. However, these rebuilders won't usually sell parts to individuals. An exception is an outfit called Salgado Automotive in Los Angeles, CA. This is a VERY unusual and unique commercial rebuilding operation and they will sell parts.

As far as the filter goes, you won't be able to get that from an auto parts store. And, you won't even be able to get one from Salgado Automotive; they don't have any. The only guy that I know that has those filters is a guy that doesn't sell parts.

That wouldn't happen to the the NOS part you had us guessing about recently, would it?

        Re: Power Steering Pump

Thanks for the information Joe. I don't suppose the guy who never sells parts would be able to tell me the part number from the box of the filter so I can look for one at swap meets? If I can't find one, can this part be left out of the assembly, or am I better off installing the old one even though it has seen better days?

        Thans again,

        Shane
