    Convertible Hard Top

Hi. I have a 1970 convertible with the hard top. The headliner snaps in with some hard velcro strips. The problem is that the headliner has been out for a while and I can't get it to snap back in all the way around. It snaps in every place but the front. I don't want to push too hard and break it. Any ideas? Anybody else run into this problem? Thanks

All I can tell you is that this is a very common problem with 68-75 hard tops and many came from the factory with just the sort of problem that you describe. If the guys at St. Louis couldn't get it right with a supple, new headliner, I think that you'll have a lot of trouble doing it with a 33 year old, not-so-supple piece.

      Agree

with Joe 100%. The original HT for my '71 is a joy when it's installed (windows close tightly, road noise drops, headroom improves), BUT the now aged, outgassed and hardened headliner components (in GREAT condition) are harder than they were....

They tend to warp and strain the plastic bubble form of velcro fasteners that hold them to the HT. Down a bumpy road and both of the rear/side pads will pop out at the top. Getting them to snap back (temporary fix until the next bumpy road) takes gorilla strength directly atop the fastener pads.

I doubt even removing the pads and slobbering something like RTV to set/bond would hold for the long haul....

Don't know if this will help, but my 70 hardtop headliner had a 1 inch or so sag across the front. I left it outside on a hot day to get the plastic a little more pliable. Then I used large c clamps with a block of wood underneath (to keep from marring the top) and clamped it tight. I left it that way for two weeks. It hasn't fallen back down in two years.
