Troy... 5/8" hex headed bolt w/fine threads. Uses a monster flat washer and is installed after belt pulley is in place. To my knowledge, useage started about 1962 +/-... You can use the bolt to draw the balancer into place. Don't leave home without it...

Re: Need help on Harmonic Balancer
never use a bolt to install the damper because i have repaired cranks where doing this STRIPPED out the threads in the crank. always use a stud screwed all the way into the crank and then use washers and by turning a nut on the stud draw the damper onto the crank. also use never seize on the crank snout to prevent galling. i have also run into the galling trying to remove dampers and it is not fun.- Top

Re: Need help on Harmonic Balancer
I have in my collection a Technical Service Bulletin that indicates when the addition of the bolt and washer came into production. I believe that the date was January 62--but without hunting for it, I do know for sure that it came midway through the 62 production year--and early in the 1962 calendar year.- Top

Does the bulletin identify specifically which engines started to get the balancer bolts? Non-SHP engines still had press-on balancers with no tapped hole in the crank well into the late 60's and beyond.- Top
