    '64 Alternator

    Good afternoon!

I am reassembling my original 668 37A alternator, and I forgot whether the dust shield on the front bearing faces out or in. Intuition tells me it faces out, but I want to make sure. Any ideas? I wish I had a blow-up diagram of the alternator. Oh well.

    Thanks,
    Michael Hampson

    Re: '64 Alternator

Looking in my 63-64 Corvette service manuals it shows a pretty good view of your 64 alternator. The retainer is shown with what I will call the indented area to face the rear of the alternator. It appears in my service manual to have some sort of seal also. In the view it is also states to have extra grease for the bearing in the indented area of the retainer.
So this would indicate that the drive end bearing is not sealed so it can benefit from the extra grease.
