My '64 small block has what I assume to be a rear mainseal leak. Small puddle of oil results after driving the car and letting it sit for a few hours. I've checked everything else and can only conclude this is the problem. I have a lift and am thinking of tackling the problem at some point but my real question is what other problems will this lead to if I don't fix it? The car has less than 50K miles and is driven less than 500 miles/year. All comments appreciated.

Re: C2 Rear Main Seal Ramifications
David - while you may very well have a rear main leak, there are also other areas that can look like a rear seal leak. Valve covers or intake manifold leaks frequently can drain down the back of the engine, there are multiple plugs in oil galleys that can weep, the rear cam plug in the back of the engine, etc. Having said that, it is still quite likely the seal is weeping. It is not that hard a job to do underneath, and on a corvette you don't have to lift the engine to get the pan off, and it can be changed in the car. However, the leak doesn't really hurt much other than the mess, unless it is severe enough to risk oil on the clutch friction disk which of course would ruin the clutch. If you remove the metal dust shield (starter must come off) you can probably tell if the oil is weeping down between the block and the front side of the flywheel, and you will also be able to determine if there is any evidence of oil in the clutch area. Good luck...Craig- Top
