I am in the process of restoring a 1962 vette. I have access to a 1962 vette 327. It could possibly be the original engine from the car. How can I tell if it is 1962 motor and if it was the original motor out of the car. Thanks.

It shouldn't be too difficult. To tell if it's an original 1962 327, look for both the casting number and casting date on the block bellhousing flange (below the rear of the cylinder heads). The casting number should be 3782870. The casting date should be prior to about August, 1962 (H302).
To tell if the engine is an original Corvette engine, whether ot not it's original to the car, look for the engine manufacturing code on the block's stamp pad (front of right side cylinder head). There will be a series of characters whicg begins with "F". For the engine to be an original Corvette engine the last 2 characters should be "RC", "RD", "RE", "RF", "SC", or "SD".
To tell if it's the original engine installed in the car, look on the engine stamp pad to see if the car's VIN derivative is stamped there. The last six digits of the VIN derivative should match the last 6 digits of the car's VIN.In Appreciation of John Hinckley
