My 58 has black glue or caulking-like material spread on the seams of my trunk. It also is around the access panels. The "caulk" does not appear to have been painted. The car has had some repair done in the aft portion of the trunk and left rear fender. I think it was a minor hit as the original pieces were put back together. What should my trunk look like under the mat? Caulk or not? All painted the same color (ie after assembly)? I looked in Noland's book but no pix w/o the mat. Also do the clutch head screws that hold the divider have a weird recess? ie not regular or phillips Thanks, Ken

Re: C1 Trunk
Kenneth... My guess would be no caulking in the trunk area. Clutch head screws do not look like any other screw head you will run across. That is why they have their own name. Ya got'a buy a 4 or 5 piece set of "drivers" to deal with them.- Top

Re: C1 Trunk
If you have an early 58 then you have the flat fiberglass sheet that was caulked all around useing fiberglass self cutting srews which was to keep the tail pipe heat out of the trunk. Or you may be talking of the aluminum covers which were also caulked having counter sunk srews having clutch head.- Top

Re: C1 Trunk
Ken, If your car is early (before ser. #1400)you will have steel plates with black caulking unpainted. Plates are made of steel and CAD plated. They were installed after the bumper brackets, thus no paint on them. Later cars used fiberglass panels that were painted. Both used black caulk and flat head clutch screws.- Top

Re: C1 Trunk
Thanks Gentlemen. The car is #1184. It has the flat fiberglass panels painted red like the rest of the trunk. The caulking goes around these panels only, is unpainted and black. There are phillips head screws holding it in place. Does this sound correct? I'm debating on "restoring" the trunk but if it is still original I'ld rather leave it as is showing the repairs made to the fender and left access panel. The car came with the original mat although it is dry rotted and cracked into large pieces. Regarding the divider panel; did early 58's use the "S" clips at the top. Noland describes a nut and bolt fastener but I could not find this on my car nor could I find a decent picture. The 58 AIM shows clips but that page is dated 1959 or 60. Any tips on what type of paint to use on the divider and my new but not so correct (but pliable) trunk mat. A vender rec would be appreciated. Does Zip interior dye work for this. Sorry for the length of my derailing train of thoughts. Ken- Top
