    C2 Glove Box Door Rebuild

Does anyone have any experience with Long Island Corvette's glove box repair kit? They give you allen head screws that are to be used to simulate the spun rivet on the original glove box. I believe that you must drill/tap a 5/32" hole, which might be a challenge unto itself. Has anyone seen a repaired door using this kit

    Dave,

I used Dr. Rebuild's- which I'm sure is very simular. It was tough drilling out the factory rivots even w/ a drill press. I fortunetly ( or unfortunetly) had a broken tap to finish off the threads- because the holes were so shallow (w/o going through the front). After it was all said and done- Next time, I'll buy the whole door.

      Dave:

After ruining a '66 door several years ago, I decided to have Corvette Instruments in Florida rebuild my '65's door. Rivets or tiny Allen head screws were options. I went with the screws because of the price differential (sorry, I can't remember how much more expensive it was for rivets) and they look great. If I didn't know any better, I'd think they were factory. Clean, repaint, new aluminum piece, and new emblem: $90. Prompt turn-around. I'm very happy with Roger's work.

Dave, try this method to refurbish your glove box door. Get a rebuild kit of which you will only use the door aluminum insert they give you and the emblem. Make a thin cardboard pattern of the inset in the door where the aluminum is seen. Make another pattern about 3/8" bigger all the way arround and cut that pattern out of your new aluminum insert, use a air nibbler if you can, it will make the best cut. Now you must remove the "Corvette" emblem on the door front, I use a putty knife to cut the studs that come off the back of the emblem thourgh the door. I say "cut" but it is actually with a hammer and the putty knife. The studs are small and will cut easily. Clean the door front and make sure its nice and flat. Push down on the door insert at an edge where it goes under the door and you will see that there is space to slide the new aluminum insert from the top down into the door far enough for all of it to lay flat so that you can now push it up under the top of the door edge. Go easy because the new aluminum is easily scratched. You can practice this with your cardboard patten if you wish before you cut the new insert. An amount of silicone on the back of the new insert before inserting it will along with the normal door pressure hold it in place. Line up the holes where your emblem goes with the old ones and put some of that silicone on the back of the new emblen and slap it in place. Now you have a rebuilt glove box door that does not have to be unrivited nor will it show those pesky little screws that will fall out. Hope this makes since. I can send you a drawing if you wish. Dave,

I rebuilt my door using the kit frm LIC and it came out great. Drilling is difficult, go very slowly and use a drill press. I put masking tape on the drill bit at the desired depth so as not to drill through the front of the door. The tapping process is slow and tedious. The next one I do I will buy a "bottom tap" because the holes are so shallow. As another poster mentioned, it is difficult to get enough threads with the tap included in the door rebiuld kit. If you use that tap and finish with the bottom tap you will be good to go.

          Good luck,

          George
