    68 Steering ratio setting question

If I move the tie rod ends to the "slower" setting, will that throw off the alignment or is there an offset on the 2 holes that compensates for the change?

Also, I bought a new steering damper (shock) for my 68 as it did not have one on it when I got the car.

Was the damper part of the original set up? Will it increase steering effort if installed?

    It's a manual steering car.

    Thanks,

    Rich

    Rich-----

If you move the outer tie-rod ends to the "fast ratio" position, you will need to adjust the tie rod ends to accomodate the change. "Theoretically", if you adjust the outer tie rod ends on both sides by an EQUAL number of turns, you will not disturb the toe-in alignment. However, I would still have the front end toe checked by an alignment shop after making this change. Also, the change to the "fast" steering position DEFINITELY WILL increase the steering effort. That's the "trade-off" that one experiences for the quicker ratio.

1968's with manual steering did not get the steering dampner, as did 63-67 manual steering cars (except SHP with mechanical lifters). It is possible that some earlier 68's did, but, if so, I don't think that very many, if any, did. You can add the dampner to your car, though, if you obtain the dampner and attaching brackets. It will not significantly affect steering effort.

Re: 68 Steering ratio setting question

My original owner 68 built in Feb came from the factory with manual steering and has still has the original steering dampner installed.
I can attest to the quicker ratio setting requiring more effort to steer, I changed the 68's about 15 years ago.
