Can any one explain why the oil filter on my 1957 Corvette won't seal with the rubber gasket but will seal without the gasket? Thanks.

If you're talking about the cannister-to-block rubber gasket, check to be sure that there is only ONE gasket installed (i.e. there isn't a "second" gasket which is stuck to the block). ONE gasket seals well; TWO gaskets, not-so-well.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Oil Filter on 1957 Corvette
I have had mine stick in there multiple times on oil changes, you need a sharp pointed instrument like a metal layout scribe to extract it....there is a very small space between the block oil filter housing casting and the magnesium adapter. I once had a seal on a later model spin on filter stick on the block, and without realizing it (that was when I lived in the frigid north and it was 15 below zero and snowing) I installed a new filter on a chevy 350. It is truly amazing how efficient an oil pump can be....I had a 4 food puddle in seconds...cleanup was amazingly slow for that oil change!....Craig- Top
