    68 Vette Outside Mirror(s)

Regarding the outside rearview mirror(s) on the 68:

Was a passenger side mirror available in 68 as an option?
Was the driver's side the "long legged" one?
Were they both long legged if passenger was available?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Regards,

    Rich

A passenger side rear view mirror was NOT available as a factory option for 1968. Some may have been installed by dealers, though. Dealer-installed "options" don't really qualify as regular production options. They're just accessory items installed by a dealer.

I don't know what you are referring to be "long legged" with respect to the left side mirror.

My 68 has a passenger side long legged mirror. I 'm not in the know if it was a dealer installed option, but it matches the driver side.

        Thanks Guys.

Joe, should have been a bit more clear on my description.

It's the stalk the mirror is mounted to.

When I got my car, it had a short stalk mirror on the passeger side, and a longer one (I think it's the correct one) on the driver's side.

Looks like the longer version is the right one.

        Regards,

        Rich

The passenger side version of the >1968 outside mirror became available about 1973. Prior to that there was no passenger side mirror available that matched the driver's side. That might be why there was a mis-match on your car.

I'm not so sure you are correct. Back when I bought my 1968 427/435 L89, Sept. 1968, it came with a passenger side mirror. NO charge! Most of my buddies with C2's noticed it right away. I remember discussing it. I always thought it was standard equipment. My buddies with new 69's also had the mirror.

I think Joe is right, at least from what I've been able to find out.

Passenger side mirrors may have been installed as a dealer option from 68 - 74 I think.

Also, there are 2 sizes of mirrors on the longer stems or stalks. In fact, the longer stalks seem to be the only ones that are right. The previous owner of my car must have put a shorter aftermarket mirror on the passanger side, which started my investigation of the whole thing. I understand they're longer so you can see over the hump of the rear wheel arches, which makes sense.

The smaller sized mirrors (5.5" X 3.75" - small head) offered by the standard suppliers are are the right ones for the early C-3's according to their info.

I have an original 1969 Corvette Parts and Accessories Catalog from GM, and there is no right hand mirror listed for any year. A later edition (1983) lists the RH mirror for 1974-75. I think that was the year the larger glass area was first offered, so most likely the 1973 smaller version was already discontinued.

Back in 1970 I tried to get a factory appearing right hand mirror for my then new Corvette. I couldn't get one from a Chevrolet dealer until 1973. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
