I found a broken cable on my 1970 Corvette. The manual says that it is a back drive cable. It attaches to the steering colum in the engine compartment and then appears to attach on the side of the transmission. What does it do and is "back drive cable" what it is called? Thanks

Re: Broken Cable
I don't know if this is the same on 1970, but on my 74 there is a cable from the firewall area of the steering column down to the transmission that requires the transmission be in reverse to lock the steering wheel and remove the key...a theft interlock system....not sure if this same function on yours....Craig- Top

The cable's function is as Craig described. The terminology used to decribe the cable is "transmission control lock cable".
Both the 4 speed cable, GM #3949074, and the automatic cable , GM #3949075, are GM-discontinued.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
