    Vintage Tire Preservation

I have an original 1966 , never used Goodyear Goldline spare tire/rim - in perfect condition - no cracks - It has escaped the ravages of time. The only thing I can think of regarding why it appears as new (except the goldstripe is dirty or darkened) is no sun exposure and little exposure to ozone.
I'd like it to last another 37 unscathed - any chemical engineers or rubber compound engineers out there with thoughts on a preserving dressing or material that would protect the rubber or should I just leave it alone.

You hit the nail on the head. The key is to protect them from UV and ozone. The best place to store tires is in a cool dark place away from any electrical equipment. Some wrap them in garbage bags, but I'm not convinced that this practice contributes to longevity, and I wouldn't recommend treating them with any kind of tire dressing.

Duke - Excellent point re electrical equipment. I quess an electric motors create ozone ? This is quite relevant as I just last this week placed the tire/wheel in the corner of my basement near the furnance - cool - yes - dark yes - electic motors on the blower and oilburner gun - not good - creates ozone ?? - I'll move it to the other corner !! Duke - I thank you and my tire thanks you.

Basement are good, but move it as far away from the furnace as possible as this will probably mean cooler temps and less ozone. If the basement has windows then wrapping the tire in plastic bags is probably a good idea. If it has no windows and is dark most of the time, the garbage bag is probably not necessary other than to keep it for getting dusty.
