    66-427/425 Choke Setting

I am having problems with the high idle being set when the choke is used. The choke rod or choke thermostat is wrong. I purchased a choke rod from C.Central and a thermostat from NAPA.

The choke flap on the 3247 Holley will not completly close and the high idle cam setting will not work. Can I bend the choke rod or stretch the thermostat to allow the choke flap to completely close and to set the high idle?

When warm the car starts very easy. When the car is hot, I need to depress the gas pedal similar to a flooded carb. Could my floats be too high? I have them set just below the screw holes.

    Thanks John!

John, it's possible to bend the rod to get proper actuation, but don't bend the choke spring. I got one from Chevrolet a couple of years age and was able to get it to work properly. You might try a GM dealer or a parts house that handles the AC-Delco line. The setting you have described for the floats is correct, assuming you don't have a needle & seat assy leaking. even a small piece of dirt can cause the car to leak at the needle valve. A way to check is to park the car (hot) and pull the air cleaner & look down into the carb venturi area. There should be no noticable dripping or leakage into the carb butterfly area when the car is parked level.

        John----

If there is any question in your mind about the choke stove that you have purchased, you can still get a correct one from GM under part number 3887148. The original choke rod has been discontinued, but I believe that GM #3917617 will work properly. As Bill Clupper said, you can bend the choke connecting rod but NOT the choke thermostat coil. Slight bending of the choke rod is often necessary to achieve proper choke operation. In extreme cases, you may have to fabricate a rod of required configuration.

            Choke Rod Part #

Thanks for the information. The carb was stolen on this car about late 67. I found a receipt from a chevrolet dealer which states the description Rod and a part number. I would like to post the number and see if you could help identify the rod. I am trying to search additional history on the car. I will post later this week as I am in Hawaii on business.
