C2: Block Question

I have a question .... not sure if I am completely out to lunch here, but here goes.

What distinguishes the difference between the types of block. I have a 63 SWC, and other that the assy cast number and the different parts that have been added to make up that block, what particularly about each block makes it either a manual or automatic, a 250 or 300 HP etc or is every block the same just with different components.

The blocks themselves are identical. The differences may be mostly external, such as carburation, exhaust manifold size, etc. but usually there are internal differences as well, such as piston construction, camshaft, cylinder heads, etc.

Every block casting (with the same casting number) is identical - the differences for the final application are in the internal components (crank, rods, pistons, camshaft, lifters, etc.) and external bolt-on components (heads, valves, springs, manifolds, flywheel, flexplate, etc.). One block casting can have literally hundreds of unique final vehicle applications, each of which are identified by the suffix at the end of the engine plant code stamped on the machined pad at the passenger side front of the block.

Can you tell me what G83 is too. I am under the impression it is July 8 1963, but if I use the same measure as that used on the trim it would be Mar 8 1963.

G 8 3 is July 8, 1963. Blocks start with A in January...Craig
