I was at the spring carlisle show yesterday and purchased a coil with the embossment 083 toward the top of the can. Can someone tell me the application of the coil and how to test it? I bought it because I needed the old style clips that go under the positive and negative terminals but the coil seems to look in good condition so I thought I would test it before disgarding it. Thanks in advance, Tim

Re: 083 coil
Tim,
The ST-12 lists the 083 coil application as for '56 Corvette. I believe this to be a misprint and have not seen this coil used on original'56's. Possibly this coil was used on passenger cars or trucks. To test, use a digital volt ohm meter. Place one terminal in the center hole and the other on one of the side posts. For second reading place one terminal on each side post. Readings should be: Primary resistance (ohms) 1.24-1.46. Secondary resistance (ohms) 6500-9500. Regards,- Top

Re: 083 coil
Checking primary and secondary winding resistance will give you an 85% integrity check. It'll tell you neither of the transformer's windings are burned (ignition coil is a 2-port step-up transformer).
BUT, it won't tell you about the integrity of the core laminations. If coil suffered from an overheat situation and the core lams are shot or marginal, intact windings will lack mutual inductance and the ability to transfer energy via magnetic flux from primary to secondary.
Good ole boy auto parts houses and machine shops used to have coil testers on site. These machines 'squirt' a pulsed waveform into the coil's primary winding and look for/measure the resultant output waveform. Some testers are more elaborate than others....
But, with ignition systems today all having gone solid state, it's getting darn hard to find a shop with a coil tester anymore!- Top
