Re: any ideas how to ship a 69 hood?? I need help!
Might be too big/heavy for UPS once it's crated and boxed. It's worth a call, but "truck freight" might be your only option. Large packages can be delivered to your home via tractor-trailer or to the local truck freight terminal, where you can pick it up. Chuck

Re: any ideas how to ship a 69 hood?? I need help!
Johnny, glad you found the hood for your 69, was it the one Joe commented on a week or so ago? I shipped a hood once, and it is a truck freight only shipment. Make sure you use hard foam packing, or wrap the 4 corners in plastic and use that liquid packing foam that sets to protect the 4 corners, and box well (if you can get the party to do this for you). I have shipped lots of truck freight in the past 2 years, and have found two outfits that cater to the non business shipper, at great price discounts. First is ABF Freight, they have a great online discount and tool where you can roll your own bill of lading. I arrange it myself for the person shipping, you can email them the BOL and everything, takes the hassle out for them. It's at http://www.abfs.com and you can experiment with rate classes etc. I have found class 65 the best rate. The other is http://www.freightquote.com and they get you a super rate too, used them for my Bridgeport mill. You have to do your footwork on this as far as where the closest shipper is to the person shipping to you, and con them into dropping it off, truck freight gets expensive for residential pickup and delievey, I always arrange dock to dock, it will cost you half as much! For a hood this is not so much of an issue, but for forklift items it's a mess without a dock. I suspect you will get by for $85 or so, if you work it right, that's about the bottom price for trucking. Good luck!...Craig
Greyhound ships packages and you can ship a hood without problems. I'd shipped a couple of hoods and it is much cheaper than truck freight. You are looking roughly $45 to $55 most places.
There is a drawback. Greyhound delivers bus station to bus station. You have to deliver it to their bus station and you have to pick it up at their bus stop. Sometimes that can be a bit inconvenient. I had one guy who wanted a rear deck so bad he could taste it, but the nearest bus station to him was about 30 miles and that was too far as far as he was concerned. (Heck of a lot closer than the 1200 miles I was from him.)
Hoods and most large body panels are too large for UPS and FedEx as they have a max of 130 inches = length X 2width X 2height. and a hood runs about 150-160 inches.

I built a box out of plywood about 10" deep ,padded it with bubble wrap, with hard stryrofoam on the corners.shipped a nos 66 bb hood to calif.from Il.(st louis) and recieved a used 65bb hood . 2 days each way cost was about $90 each way. through emery worldwide. I had prices up to $ 500 each way from some of the big names. when I screwed the box together with dry wall screws I screwed some old seat belt meterial on the ends I wanted to make it as easy as possable for the driver. 1 800 443 6379 ....Bill ps it weighed about 75lbs packed.
I thought the greyhound thing was a joke Im going to have the seller check into that, he had actually said something about it when we were talking.
so all we have to do is find out how much it will be and if they still will do it, and how well it needs to be packaged.
