I'm reconditioning the brake calipers on my 66coupe, and I note that the judging manual specifies semi-gloss black paint for the calipers. Does this require a specialty paint, or will any semi gloss black do the trick? Thanks

The original paint used on these calipers was really a semi-flat black rather than a semi-gloss (I have many NOS caliper halves that I've inspected for this [none for sale]). However, if I were you I would use VHT semi-gloss black caliper paint. This is the closest to original "sheen" that you can get in this paint. This is a special high heat paint that is RELATIVELY impervious to chemical attack. Glycol-ester brake fluid (DOT 3 and 4) which often gets "spilled" on calipers during bleeding operations will instantly remove most paint. This paint will last awhile exposed to it, though. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

John and John----
Yes, but you want to make sure that you get the special VHT paint for brake calipers. Not all places that carry VHT carry these. Vic Hubbard Speed and Marine in Hayward, CA is one that I know does----that's where I get mine.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 66 Brake Calipers
John,
I have had good luck mixing Rust Oleum gloss with Rust Oleum flat to make a semi gloss. I use about 1/3 gloss with 2/3 flat. It makes a paint that will last for a long time and will stand up to DOT 3 and DOT 4 brake fluids. Apply with a large artist brush and clean tha machined surfaces after it dries. You can buy Rust Oleum in any hardware store.- Top
