    C1 Markings

I recently read about the various grease pencil makings on a C1. I have a 1959 Red/Red with 250 H.P. FI, Power top, and Power windows. I have three questions:
    1) Where should I be able to see hand written markings on this car?
    2) What color should these markings be?
    3) Any hand written markings on the frame/suspension?
Thank you for your help. John

    John...

I can tell you of a couple...On the passenger side, between the trunk & deck lid spring tower and the side of the car, as you remove the paint, written in green pencil will be the color of the car. To locate, remove the paint slowly and it will appear on the gas tank/ soft top panel. The other marking is the job number, again written in green, located on the passenger door. Other markings are the serial number & date stenciled in red on the drivers side of the frame and the driveshaft number stenciled in yellow.

In addition my 60 had a 3 digit #in grease pencil or crayon under the dashpad and on the fire wall on the engine side. I presume that this # is what I have heard called a broadcast number and was just a Number that was used to keep track of cars in production and the number was not tied in any way to the VIN of the car or the date.

You will also see markings inside the instrument cluster (speedo) housing, on the front of the firewall and other places, but always in places where they are either hidden from view or painted over in subsequent production procceses

The reference to the "serial number" on the frame (in red stencil) is the part number of the frame, much like the stencil on the driveshaft - it has no reference to any kind of VIN.

John - On your car, also believe you'll find EW in crayon on both inner door (window) cavities. I came across this on a 1958 and a 1962 = both with Power Windows. Assume the boys on the line thought (E)lectric (W)indows was OK,

I've also seen yellow grease pencil markings on the bell housing, behind the passenger seat on the bulkhead, and on the underside of the gas tank cover lid. They were a 2 digit number on the bell housing and 3 digit numbers on the gas tank lid and on the bulkhead. I assumed they were broadcast numbers.

I've see the number on the trunk side of the bulkhead. I understood that to be the paint code number.

I just hate it when you stay up past your bed-e-by time.

Trunk left trunk hinge mount should be the date stamped in green ink and some of the loose fiberglass pieces will have the build no. or date written in pencil on them such as the rear trunk filler piece behind the spare tire and above the kick panel on the passenger side.
