Most that read this are going to "cringe' and say "why" but here goes. Most all of my driving now is in town and I am just getting tired of the bellowing. I am also pretty sure that it's time for new exhaust so I got 3 prices and they were all +- $500.So I checked two local muffler shops to see if there was a small diameter standard muffler that would fit in the covers...none to be found. But both shops suggested packing or steel wool to "quiet" it up!My thoughts on that was that it would restrict the exhaust too much.I think I have just slowly adjusted to the worn out exhaust...I wish someone could Email me the sound of new to compare mine to it! Is there anything I can do to quiet them up without losing the side exhaust?

Re: chambered exhaust
Steve,
Unless you could find stainless "steel wool", it would quickly rust out and go away leaving you where you are now.
Committing heresy, the hotrod world has baffles that can be added to the, apparently open, headers/collectors on street rods to make them quieter. More baffles means quieter exhaust.
If you choose that route the muffler shop would have to make up new side pipes from straight pipe, insert baffles, and away you go.
