re amp guage tom buddie with the engine off turn on the headlights radio fan motor and step on the brake all at the same time the ammeter should deflect noticeabley below zero after a few minutes start the engine the alternator should start re charging the battery and the ammeter should deflect noticeably to or charge if the ammeter does not react in either of these tests then a the internal coil is open the gauge is bad or b the gauge has been bypassed wired out of the circuit

re amp guage gary schisler an amp gauge has two electrical contacts on the back of the gauge it is nothing more than an indicator of electrical flow if your car is drawing power then it will indicate a discharge and when charging will indicate a positive charge if you have a schematic of your electrical system you can trace the wires bac to see where they originate and in many cases find out where the problem is when my amp gauge wasn't working i put a volt meter on both terminals in my case i deteremined that there was current going to both sides i traced things back through the firewall and found a loose connection having an accurate electrical diagram is a must most good corvette catalogs and the gm service manual for your year have a schematic i know that this isn't very specific but your best bet is to start tracing your wiring it is also possible that the ammeter is dead to the best of my knowledge they are not repairable you will have to find a replacement
