My 64 came with a spin on oil filter installed by the previous owner. Ive located an original canister and was considering changing it back to the original configuration but was wondering if there was any filtering benefit in using one over the other. Thanks

Re: C-2 Oil filter......Spin On vs Canister
I don't think you'll see much of a difference in filtration unless you're using the latest low micron spin-on filters. There's both pro and con issues to reverting to factory stock....
Pro: If car is to be judged, you'll get high partial to full credit for the original cannister depending on condition and whether on not instructions are silk screened (as original) or mylar decal.
Pro: Each time you replace the filter in the cannister, you get a fresh/new seal. The spin-on is fitted to your engine with an adaptor and while each new spin-on can has a fresh built-in seal, few ever replace the seal between the spin-on adaptor and the block that CAN wear over the years and begin to leak.
Con: Cannister drop-in filter elements are OLD technology and while they're still available from NAPA and other auto parts stores, few actually stock an inventory meaning order and wait for it to arrive from the local warehouse.
Con: With the spin-on adaptor you can pick 'n choose between all of the modern filter alternatives easily.- Top

Re: C-2 Oil filter......Spin On vs Canister
Don-----
I would only recommend converting it back for judging purposes. Even then, I'd convert it back to spin-on after judging.
For one thing, the spin-on is obviously far more convenient when it comes to oil filter change time. So, that's one big advantage right there.
Also, you can obtain far better filtering elements in the spin-on style filters than you can with the cartridge type. For cartridge type filters, all you can get are the old paper element technology. This is really just about the same technology (regardless of what the marketers say) as was used 40 years ago.
With spin-on filters you can use vastly improved synthetic-media filters. These are expensive, but they're far more efficient in removing very small particles from engine oil. The PF-35L is one of these which is available from GM which will "spin-right-on" any 57-67 Corvette converted to spin-on filter and any 68-91 Corvette. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
