    Kevin-----

The correct original filter, both PRODUCTION and SERVICE, was GM #25014155 which is also known as an AC PF-970C. The PRODUCTION and SERVICE versions of this filter were painted black with a black and silver Delco label. This filter remains available in SERVICE, but I don't know if the currently available versions are black or blue. If you have seen some that are blue, then I expect that they have changed from the original black.

Mid America is selling the black ones by the six pack. I bought a pack for my 90 ZR1 about 3 months ago.

                Re: C4 ZR-1 oil filter

My 90 ZR1 had 1700 miles on it when i bought in early 1991 and it had a black oil filter with delco decal as Joe noted. I didn't have the car a week and I ordered a case of oil flters from the local Delco jobber. The case contained Black filters. a year or so later i ordered another case and they came in blue. Black ones have been scarce as hens teeth at carlisle for the last 10 years or so. If MidAmerica has black ones, they are either real early NOS items or they were blue ones treated to black paint. Mike-----

The blue variety filters can easily be painted to black. The problem is that I think the blue ones have a different label than the black ones. Plus, it would be difficult or impossible to remove the label and re-apply it, anyway.

A little known fact is that the ZR-1 filters were not the only PRODUCTION oil filter that was painted black. It was the only SERVICE replacement for a PRODUCTION oil filter that was painted black (the Delco UPF series which was/is painted black is an aftermarket only item, NEVER used in PRODUCTION).

For 1992 Corvette LT1 PRODUCTION its PF-51 oil filters were painted black. These black-painted filters were NEVER available in SERVICE---you could just get the blue variety in SERVICE. I believe that this was done by GM as a subtle means of "checking" to see if oil filters had been changed when a customer came in for serious engine warranty work. If it showed up with a black oil filter, 25, 000 miles, and a blown engine, GM might be able to say without fear of contradiction that the oil filter had not been serviced at the warranty-required interval.

I think that the PRODUCTION black oil filters ended with the 1992 model year and, perhaps, might not even been used for very late 1992 PRODUCTION. I visited the Flint engine plant in July, 1992 and they were using the blue filters at that time for the first-build 1993 LT1 engines.

The black filters are available at various Corvett supply companies except they are not correct just because they are black. The black one available now has a bar coded label on them where as the original one did not. I am familiar with this only pertaining to a 1990 which is what I have, not sure about the other years. The PF970C is the correct number
