It's not clear to me if you're trying to determine if the car was originally an L-82 or if the engine in it now is an L-82.
You can determine if the car was originally an L-82 by simply referring to the VIN number. For a 1977 L-82, the 5th character in the VIN should be an "X". If it's an "L", that denotes an L-48.
As, far as whether the engine is an L-82, there are several ways to go about it. First, if the VIN check confirms that the car was originally an L-82, then simply check the engine stamp pad (on block extension in front of passenger side cylinder head). If the VIN derivative on the block matches the last several digits of the VIN, then the engine is likely original and an L-82.
If the block VIN derivative doesn't match the VIN, then you may have a replacement engine. It's pretty hard to confirm, externally, if the engine is an L-82 since most of the differences are internal and unseen. However, one thing that you could look for is the presence of an 8" OD harmonic balancer which is about 1-11/16" thick. Only the L-82 for 1973-80 used this balancer. L-48 balancers were much smaller. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Help Identification
Thanks for the info. Joe - The previous owner stated the car was an L-82. I never checked. All I saw was Corvette. Now that some of the original parts need replacing I'm finding that the replacement parts for the L-82 and whats on my car don't look the same. I actually own an L-48. "Won't change a thing still love that car".
Had the car a couple of years but am very much a novice. Thanks again- Top
