    1961 Dash Insert

In need of a good place to refurbish the stainless dash insert on my '61. Any thoughts/experience would be appreciated.

The dash insert is aluminum and reproductions are readily available. No one seems to want to do any of their own restoration work anymore, so you can also send your insert assy off to most of the major vendors for refurbishment for a rather steep fee.

Agree with ed. the repos are cheap compared to repairing tand anodizing the original. the repo is of extremely good quality.I'd go with repo also. mike

I sent my 60 dash insert down to Corvette Spec. of MD and they did a great job For what I thought was a reasonable price. I was afraid of damaging the new repro insert so wouldn't attempt it myself. THey also re-spot welded the stainless trim back on. They offer an expedited service for a small charge for guy's like me who just can't wait!

            Stephen...

If you want to do your own: purchase a new Insert, remove the colored bars and cut the welds on the back. (use a small disk cutter) remove the old insert and install the new one. Tie the ends with rubber bands to hold in position and reweld the spots or epoxy will done just fine. Hardest part is removing the grab bar bracket on the right side, the left one can remain in position for inserting the dash insert.

Dennis - Thanks for the tips. Prior to my e-mail, I tried to do what you had suggested. Unfortunately, I mangled up the repo aluminum insert. I had a difficult time getting the chrome trim back over the aluminum insert and the housing. That's when I pinched a piece of the insert creating a nasty crinkle. If you have any other suggestions, I would appreciate them. I am going to experiment a little with the damaged insert before I resort to sending it out for repair.
