    68 speeometer drive geer

    Anyone have a source, and or part mumber, for a 68 M21 wide ratio, speedometer drive gear.

    The gear is a press on, 8-tooth steel gear. Axle ratio is 3.55. Thanks, Lawrence

      1968 Muncies did not originally use a steel, press-on gear. If that's what you have, then the gear has been changed. Check the mainshaft in the area of the speedo DRIVE gear journal and note whether a small groove and hole is present at that location. If so, then you have a 68 mainshaft and you can use nylon DRIVE gear GM #6261794 which is still available from GM. You will also need clip GM #1373122 which is also still available.

      If you don't have the groove and hole, then someone must have changed the shaft to a pre-68 shaft (OR you actually have a 71-74 Muncie). Check the extension housing casting number and report and I can tell you which you have.

      If you have a pre-68 Muncie shaft, then you require a steel DRIVE gear which is no longer available from GM. I think that this gear is available in the aftermarket, though. Check with Ed Hartnett of Lansdowne, PA. The 71-74 Muncie also uses a steel gear (but a different one) which is no longer available, either. I think that this one is available aftermarket, too.

              What color and number of teeth on the gear would you need for a 3.70 rear with a 68 and later Muncie box?
