C2 Odometer Died...RIP

The odometer and the trip odometer on my '65 quit, the speedometer is working normally. Any ideas on what gave up/broke, is this a common problem? Any sources for needed parts? I am ready to restore the guages and dash and would like to do everthing in one repair. Anything else I should do while the cluster is disassembled? Thank you...

What you mean it hasnt done it before now? This is the most common speedo problem. Makes for some nice low milage cars. The gear is worn out and replacememts are most dificult to find. Dont let any body use the plastic replacement unless you are disconnecting the trip or you will be doing it again soon.

Thanks Wayne. Is this something I can fix myself or is it a job for a professional speedo man (after speedo assy is removed from car)? What is the name of this gear if I go looking for one? Is it only one gear that wears out, or does whatever it mates to wear out as well? Where can I get the GOOD gear(s)? Are these parts common to other GM cars from the same era? From what you are saying it sounds like the TRIP odometer is putting extra strain on that gear. I could live without the trip odometer if the main one lasts my lifetime!

The gear is inside the unit and it is best left to the professional. Most GM units that incorporate trip odometers had them. We used to get them out of old school busses. If you leave the trip odometer inoperable the plastic gear will last well.
