    '65 Tailshaft

A friend and his Camaro buddies are taking issue with Mr. Colvin's pronouncement that the 5857584 Muncie tailshaft extension was not used until February 1965. I told him that I THOUGHT the big difference was the RH location of the speedo gear on the 584 and , if so, someone out here would know if EARLY 1965 Corvettes routed the speedo cable on the driver's or passenger side of the tunnel - and the answer is.......?

    Re: '65 Tailshaft

Dunno, but the lead A.I.M. Sheet (M20, Sheet 1), which shows the transmission assembly part numbers, was released in June '64, and was "redrawn and revised" on 4-23-65; all this sheet has is an illustration and transmission assembly part numbers, so this revision apparently was done to show the revised transmission configuration (RH speedo replacing LH) and the new transmission assembly part numbers that change generated.

However, Sheet 4, which shows the speedo cable routing and clipping, was released on 5/28/64, and apparently showed the RH side speedo at that time, as the subsequent revisions through 4-23-65 deal with minor issues, none of which include anything to do with speedo cable usage, routing, or clip locations (all of which changed when the transmissions changed).

Either the lead sheet (1) was issued late as a "catch-up" to the transmission change, or the RH routing/clipping sheet (4) was released early, in anticipation of a start-of-production effective point for the change. Tough to come to any conclusion without looking at known-original cars.

      Re: '65 Tailshaft

Loren -- My gut feel is that no '65s left St.Louis with "429" trans tailshaft housings. My '65 VIN 01487 (S-280, D6) with its original trans ["584" tail] was completed the first day the strike was over, and body components / clips / plugs / grommets might have even been installed mid-September, before the stike began.

The AIM UPC M20, Sheet 4 shows the firewall plug (just above the clutch rod) and the RH firewall and RH trans tunnel clips with a revision note of 8-4-64 (was a different clip, prior). The only reason for these RH clips is the "584" tailhousing. Also, the mid-firewall 2-hole grommet (for speedo and tach shafts) was unique to RH speedo connections on the trans. There is no revision record for this part, indicating (to me) that it was called for since the start of '65 production. Same with the longer speedo cable required for the RH tail connection. An optional cable was added 10-12-64. The LH speedo cable tunnel clip (for 3-speed (and auto (?)) trans was still installed on all bodies, unused only if Z01 back-up light harness not requ'd.

I wish I had more actual examples to test this hypothesis.

        Re: '65 Tailshaft

I have a Decenber Build and a January Build car, both with original transmissions and both with the RH side speedo output and associated equipment. I owned #838 at one time and it was RH output also, I had always looked at this as a start of production change, and I have never seen any evidence to the contrary. I never heard of this February story until recently
