    C2 Odometer Gear Replacement

I am new to C2s and understand that replacing the odometer gear is a difficult task. Despite that I am willing to give it a try. Does anyone have a link to an on-line, step-by-step guide on this job? Or advice?

Are you referring to the odo gear in the transmission, or the odo gears in the speedo head. If you are talking the speedo head, when the odo gears go out it is usually due to wear in the supporting section of the speedo head. The instructions to fix this are simple, send it to a qualified speedo shop. You have your choice of a number of vendors who advertise in the "Driveline" or you can still find local shops in most major cities, check with your local dealership's service or parts department.

I am assuming it is the gear in the speedo head (see pic). But I will check the gear in the transmission also. Which one normally goes? Also I will inquire about speedo shops in town.

If the speedometer still works, and only the ODO does not, the problem is in the Speedo head.

Thanks. That indeed is the case.

There are two gears in there that look a lot alike. I cant describe which one to you but you should be able to tell. The act of changing the gear is not to difficult, but finding a metal gear is, and thats the only one that you should put back in unless you are disconnecting the Trip. If you get a plastic gear and install it, sometimes the calibration of the speedo is affected. It`s a magnetic thing. And the new gear will go in a short time. There is a lot of work in getting that guage and cluster out and in if things are not right. Thats why it is better to let the profesional do it.

Wayne - in your experience, do most good spedometer shops have the plastic gear now or steel? My 67 guage cluster is nicely restored, but the odometer is broken and apparently the gear was replaced and went out quickly, so I am assuming it was done incorrectly with plastic. Are these GM only parts, or, are there aftermarket suppliers of the steel gear? Does the speedometer restoration shop in Florida (don't recall the name) use the correct gears? Thx!...Craig

The steel gears havent been available for many years. I dont know that the individual parts were ever available from Chevrolet. The speedo shops get their parts from an outside source. Most likely a plastic gear was used when yours was rebuilt, or an old stock or used metal gear. The fact that it failed so quickly would indicate plastic.

Thank you for your comments. As you have seen I have the plastic gear from Rowley but I shall try to find a metal one.

                      Paul:

Contact Roger at Corvette Instrument Service. He does excellent work, and is always willing to help--not like the other Roger, or those crooks in Maryland. He is located in Florida, and contact info will be found at www.corvetteinstruments.com Good luck.
