backfire troubleshooting help larry have a fi and it's been running great fi unit beens recently rebuilt and runs great ruled this out since the shuting off and backfiring are not indications of a bad unit yesterday drove for about miles then the car surged and appeared to lose power then backfired at mph cleared up then did it again coming down the interstate at each time it surged actually cut off then started back up since i have a clutch sounds like an ignition problem replaced the rotor cap rotor button coil checked plug wires started and after about five minutes had the surge again and since i was still at the house it cut off any suggestions as to where to check next appreciate any help larry

re backfire troubleshooting help gary schisler how about a little background info for some learning here which condensor are you talking about the one that connects to the top of the coil which i always call a capacitor to reduce radio noise or are you taking about the one in the distributor i haven't heard of backfires being caused by this before of course i ain't exactly mr goodwrench either just an average repair kind of guy i guess life is a big learning curve thanks for the informationComment
