My temp gauge has been hovering between 220-240. I changed the thermostat and now she is at 240 constantly. Is there someting else I should check or is it possible that the temp gauge is not correct.

Well, it would certainly seem that your problem is unrelated to the thermostat, but that doesn't surprise me; if I had a nickel for every thermostat that was needlessly replaced in an effort to "cure" overheating problems, I'd probably be a multi-millionaire. It is possible that your gauge is incorrect, but unlikely that it SUDDENLY became incorrect. Usually, gauge problems result from incompatible, replaced sending units, replaced/restored gauges, or dash removal resulting in damage or improper reinstallation of the gauge. If any of these apply, I'd direct my attention in that area.
Otherwise, I'd refer to the "Overheating 454" discussion which is still on the board. All of the information which others and myself provided would apply in your case.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 64 Temp Gauge
Joe's advice is great, as usual, but I will add my two cents worth here. When your car is running this hot, can you hear any gurgling in the radiator hose or perhaps in the overflow tank? This might be an indication of water at or near boiling. In addition, there was a very good article in The Restorer a while back that talked about this very subject. I don't recall what year the car was but he used a pyrometer to measure actual temperature and then wound up putting in resistors in line to compensate for temp sending unit errors. The gist of it is, make sure you have an overheating problem first!- Top
