Well, it's time for the final installment of the 63-79 Corvette universal joint series. This is actually the simplest of the series since only 1 universal joint was used.
Driveshaft Universal Joints---1968-70 with TurboHydramatic and All 1971-1979
During the entire above referenced period, only 1 part number was used for all referenced applications. This was GM #390133. This universal joint was manufactured by Spicer. It used a "square" type trunnion with a round indented center on both sides. On the trunnion was cast "Spicer" and "USA". There were no grease fittings.
This u-joint used the same 1.06" diameter bearing caps as the 63-67 and 68-70 with M/T universal joints. However, the universal joint size(diameter) as measured end-to-end on opposing bearing caps was greater. The earlier u-joint diameter was 3.3" and the 390133 measures 3.7".
Bearing caps had indented ends with the words "Spicer" and "621P" stamped into the center of the ends. Seals were black rubber/plastic.
Universal joint GM # 390133 was discontinued in June, 1996 and replaced by GM #12545626. This universal joint is still available in service, but I do not currently know its configuration. Although never catalogued by GM as a replacement for the 390133 universal joint, other GM universal joints have been used over the years as replacements/alternates for the 390133 universal joint. These include GM #1482672 and GM #3937988, and, possibly, others. These joints have grease fittings and were never originally supplied on a Corvette.
Well, that's it. End of series.
