    1962 fuel pump

I'm having trouble identifying my fuel pump. I have a '62 with the 327/360 hp F.I motor, and according to all the books I've read and the assembly manual, I'm supposed to have a 4656 fuel pump. I pulled mine off recently, and discovered it's a 4657 1E. I cannot find ANY information on this fuel pump. It's been on the car for over 30 years, but I now wonder if it is the original. I'd just like to know if it is indeed original, or if it's not, where the heck it came from! Thanks!!

The 4657 pump was a service replacement for the 4656. The only difference was in the positionong of the inlet and outlet relative to the block mounting surface. The 4657 pump came with a page of instructions showing how to unbolt the lower section of the pump and rotate it to make several different configurations.

JD- As a follow-up to Bill's response, I found a copy of the "instruction sheet" to convert the 4657 to a 4656 (Pg 24). These instructions were published in the Summer 1987 edition of the restorer, which is also probably covered in the archives. This article also says the 4657 was used on some 63-66 small block Vette engines. I've also seen references (vendor ads) to use on anything from a 58-348 passenger car to a 62-409 passenger car, as well as the 63-66 Vette. BTW, the neat thing about that Restorer issue, is the cover picture showing our buddy holding his shotgun ready to bag a mid-year!! Cheers, Dick Eaton
