    C1 Exhaust Question

I just bought a new exhaust system for my '60 from CC and the system includes an exhaust donut sleeve. My existing exhaust has a heat riser valve, but no sleeve. Not to seem ignorant, but do I need the donut sleeve that CC included or is it used in place of the heat riser valve? I'm aware that GM provided a spacer which replaced the heat riser valve, but I can't seem to get a good picture of the OEM system showing this sleeve in any of my reference books; i.e. NCRS manual, Noland Adam's book, or 58-62 Assembly manual. Thanks.

use the heat riser if its a carb, the spacer if its a FI. in either case , you'll have to use the sleeve to seat the header pipe into the riser or spacer.

Thank you Mike. I apologize - I should have mentioned that I have a 283, single 4 bbl. base engine. Thanks again for the quick reply. Pete

        Pete -

Most of the original pipes had a welded-in sleeve piece, so the separate one wasn't needed; you need one or the other to support the I.D. of the "donut". The "donut" is compressed inward by the bevel on the pipe flange and the machined surface of the heat riser valve casting when the nuts are torqued, and if the stepped sleeve (or "extension", as GM called it) isn't installed, the "donut" will eventually crumble and cause an exhaust leak.
