Is there a test to determine if ammeter is working? The only movement I can get is slight ( 1/16") deviation when engine is off and headlights turned on, otherwise needle is always straight up.

Re: C2 Ammeters
i just went through this. pull the wire plug from the ammeter. then take and attach two wires using alligator clips to the bare ammeter terminals. 14 or 16 or 18 gauge will all work. then take a 1.5 volt AA battery and tap the bare ends of the wires to the battery ends and then reverse the battery. in each case the ammeter ought to go instantly to at least +/- 25 "amps".i did this test with two different ammeters, one in the car, and the other a new rebuild that i have in the basement. each gave a 25 amp deflection.
you can also test the resistance across the bare ammeter terminals using a digital meter; if i remember, the reading was about 500 milliohms. this has been the subject of many posts. under normal conditions, there is very little deflection from upright under normal conditions. i see it move with every flash of my turn signal, but not much. but that tells me the gauge is working. with my battery reading 12.8 volts at rest, and with the alternator cranking out 13.8 volts, there is little positive charging going on to deflect the meter.
best,

With the engine off, key on, pull on the headlamps and the high Blower on the fan. you should see a significant deflection (20 amps approx) of the meter. you can check that without having to crawl under the dash and inhook anything.Bill Clupper #618- Top
