    Had an accident today...

I haven't posted here in a while, but many of you helped me through the restoration of my '58 a few years back. Today, I need some advice. I was backing the '58 up the driveway, after the first drive this year, and caught the driver's side door on a fence post. I'm not sure how, and I've gone over it in my mind a hundred times, but I can only guess that the door came unlatched when driving up my steep, dirt driveway. When I pulled in and began backing uphill into the garage, it opened enough to catch on the fence post. Of course, I am looking to the rear over my right shoulder, and didn't have a clue until I heard the crunch of fiberglass. Long story short, the hinges are bent, and the door hinge area is all busted up, there are cracks forward of both hinges, the trim is shot, and there is a hole in the rear of the door where it came in contact with the post. The worst part is that the silver blue metallic base/clear paint will never be right again, and matching it properly will probably require a total repaint.

I called Hagerty today, and they want me to get an estimate, but up here in the sticks of Vermont, there aren't any shops I would trust to do the job right. How do I go about finding a shop within a reasonable distance that does quality restoration and not just bodywork? Any tips on dealing with Hagerty, and the shop once I find one? Any idea how much this will cost? When I restored the car, I took the body right down to bare glass and put a year into getting it and the paint just about perfect. It was a lot of work, and I don't think I want to do it again.

At this point, I am considering just selling the car, but maybe I will feel differently about it after the shock wears off. Any suggestions from anyone who has been down this road before will be appreciated.

    Glenn:

Like many of us who have damaged our prides and joy, we share the feeling you now have. Like any personal loss, this will take a while to overcome, but overcome it you will. If you've owned your '58 for any length of time (and is sounds like you have), it's become a part of you.

My point is: Don't sell the car! Everything is fixable. Get ready for a battle with the insurance company, do the research for a competent shop (at least the states in New England are relatively small, help shouldn't be too far away), and resolve to persevere on your car's behalf. She'll love you for it.

    Good luck,

    Mark

Glenn, sorry to hear about your accident. I don't have a recomendation for you but would encourage you to fix the car and not sell. I also encourage you to recap your experience good or bad with your insurance company as a question about collector cars and insurance seems to come up on the board every other week. Good luck.

Glenn - sorry to hear about your mishap, but like everyone else says, don't sell, you WILL get over it. Now, I live in AZ so I am not at all close, but, I know Kevin Makay in New York (Valley Stream I believe) is superb. Sounds close to local to me...from my vantage point...and it will be fixed right if you can get into his shop...Craig

            Glenn,

-----I dont think there is one of us who hasnt faced some experience similar to yours.I agree with whoever said dont dwell on it.selling the car as is wont help you a bit.
-----My experiences with Hagerty have been much more pleasant than you are perparing yourself for.I have heard others say the same thing.Good people!Take things one step at a time, and try to view it as a learning experience.
-----As for a shop,Im trying to think of Rons name down in Mass.Someone help me here as I feel he would be a good choice for this repair.
-----I also think you may be surprized about the paint match issue.Good 2-step painters today can work wonders!
-----Good luck and keep us all informed of your progress. It will take your mind off the actual accident............Bill S

The fact that your paint is bc/cc makes it very easy to match and blend. It's probably not as bad as it seems, though I can certainly "feel your pain". Good luck.

                  PS Glenn
Dont sell the because of this, soon this will just be a bad memory
                  Sell the car because
You hate the feel of the wind in hair when you go for a ride,
You hate the sound of the earley small blocks winding up
You hate looking at the louvered hood and the two chrome strips on the trunk lid
You hate all the atention the car brings when you take it for a spin
I could go on But I hope you get the idea,

Best of luck and I feel your pain

                    Glenn
In 1970 I owned a 1961 Hondorus Maroon/White Cove beauty that I cherished. One of my rituals was to park in extreme areas of parking lots far away from all dangers. One day I was parking at work (remember this was a real car then) and found the perfect spot way out of the way in the corner. I was backing in and opened the drivers door so I could "sight" down the side to stay close but not touch the curb and also watch to insure that the rear valance did not connect the curb in back. I smartly eased back with confidence - but completely forgot about a telephone pole to my left. Well - I knew something was not good when my perfect drivers door from my perfect Corvette was now laying face down on the ground - the hinges snapped cleanly off. I could not get the door back on the car and it did not fit in trunk - so I had to carry it under my arm into my office - where all my "friends" could not stop laughing.

Anyway - I never got over it - but began to laugh about it myself - it was fixed properly with no one the wiser about my stupidity - I enjoyed the car for many more years and eventually sold it for all the usual reasons - except that I regret to this day that I sold it - Bottom line -it wull be fixed fine - just do your homework and heed good recomendations for a shop - lighten up a bit and laugh about your "brilliant" move - and enjoy your wonderful 58 for a long long time.

                            Glenn -

Sorry for your loss. Keep the car; have it fixed. When I lived in New York, I took my car to Marcel's Corvette Shop in Mechanicville, NY (a little north of Albany) for any work I didn't want to attempt myself. Marcel has been in business probably 25 years, is a fantastic individual to work with, and has done body-off restorations on a number of cars, including a '58 some years back. His work quality is excellent. His number is 518-664-7344, and he has his own website (going from memory: Marcelscorvette.com; I hope I'm not mistaken). He's easy to reach from southern Vermont. Best of luck. Larry Maher, #10713

I couldn't bear to look under the 58's cover today, so I took the 1950 pickup out for a ride. Nothing like a screaming old 216 to bring everything back into focus.

Thanks to all of you for the words of encouragement and the recommendations. You're right. I have some homework to do....sort of like choosing a doctor. I'm going to make some phone calls to New York on Monday. It doesn't look good for the 50th birthday celebrations, though. How many points are deducted for no door?
