    1972 Windshield Washer

    Hello All,

I'm trying to do some last minute things on the 72 to get ready for Seven Springs. The windshield washer hasn't been used in over 15 years, and it's having a problem.

I have primed the lines; do I need to somehow prime the pump? If I use the wipers and then press for the washer, I'll get fluid out for 5-10 seconds, and then it's done no matter how long I press the button. I can hear the pump clacking, but no more fluid. If I fill the lines with fluid again, same result.

Any clue on how to proceed? Yes, the washer bottle has plenty of fluid in it.

Patrick, is the tube free abd clear? Take a long, thin needle, or a very thin gauge wire and poke into the tube hole. Then disconnect the hose from the squirter tube. Blow water backwards through to the tube to see if any dirt or contaminants are in there. I had this same problem with the 72. Once I did that it starter working much better. I went through several mouth-fulls of water before I stopped getting dirt, scale and who knows what out of the tube.

      Pat,

If you washer module is like or similar to the one in my 73, try blowing water through the resivor end into the module. If you see any leakage at the module, your seal is shot. I just did this with mine and I replaced the triple o-ring seal that I got from Paragon. Mine are up and running fine now. Hope this helps.

You may be able to find some parts for the windshield washer pump at a auto parts store that carries "HELP" line of blister pack parts.

I just purchased this washer rebuild kit from my local Chevrolet dealer. It is supposed to find application from 1963 to 1974. The price was about $10.00.
