    C2 Front Valence Repair

Please see pic. This C2 took a minor hit on the driver's front area at some point. I am told the repairs were done without the use of a "grille rod bracket" and that has led to the crack you can see. Q1-What is a grille rod bracket? Q2-Where is it installed? Does the rad have to come out? Q3-What filler would be used to fill that crack? Thanks!

The grill rod bracket or brace rods attaches to the inside of the headlight openings and the bottom of the radiator support. I have just re-installed mine and it is easy to do. You will need to loosen the radiator and shroud to insert the lower radiator support bolt on the right side. I had the bolts installed before installing the radiator and placed a nut on the bolts to hold them in place. The brace rods have a welded nut on them. As for the crack: I would hollow grind the crack and fill it with fiberglass strands and resin. (Do not use matt,) The crack seems to be close to or at a factory bond. If this is the case, and it is broken loose, you may have to grind clean and re-bond to the bonding strip using a bonding agent. If the crack is not in the bonding area, I would use the hollow grind procedure on the inside surface first and then hollow grind and fill the bottom with glass strands and resin. The finial stage is good body filler, sand to contour and maybe one coat of feather light product for any air bubble holes. Finally sand to contour and paint.

      Ray,
That is very useful information. Thank you! I have the rod bracket as you can see from the pic. Glad to read that the rad and shroud do not have to come out but can be loosened to get the bolt in. The crack seems to be at a bonding point so I will be looking for a bonding agent.

I will not have the car until several weeks hence so I am trying to visualize the placement of the bracket at this point. Any chance you could e-mail me a couple of pics of that area? Thanks!

        Paul -

You'll find the lower bracket for the rod (and the bond joint) in UPC 11/13, Sheet B3, item 8, and the rod itself is in UPC 12, Sheet A4, item 1 (in the '67 A.I.M.). If you don't have an A.I.M., you need one, and the on-line store on this site has them.

Thanks John. The AIM comes with the car and I will have both shortly. Although I know my 1979 inside-out, the 1967 represents a new learning experience. Expect me to be bothersome in the near future!

The supports you are referring to transfer the load of the headlight buckets and motors to the radiator support bracket. If they are not installed, the nose will vibrate and flex. This is especially noticeable at night - you can see your headlight beams bouncing all over the road.

There is no support in the area of the crack. It appears that something struck the car from below (parking barrier???). I seriously doubt the crack in the photo was the result of not having nose supports.

              Mike,
I suspect you are absolutely right. I will report on the repair when I have had a chance to have a go at it!
