I was looking through my new Paragon catolog and was going to order new exaust manifolds. As you may know my car is a 68 427/390 without air. The question is the book says I need manifolds without the 4 brass fittings due to the fact my car has no air. Mine have those fittings, and my car also had those "V" shaped Shims that tilt the motor to level the carb bowls. What's up?? I have the tank sticker, what should I look for on it. No other signs of air equipment. The ## on the manifolds are 3880828 RH GM1 dated F 17 7 (I think) and 3880827 LH1 GM and dated C18 with also the numbers 827 LH1 (I think) Any help is great. Get back with you later with more questions...Having trouble putting the transmission into the motor. I think the clutch disk is mis-aligned. I'm about 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch of getting it into the motor.??. thanks

For the moment, since you're referring to the "brass plugs" in the exhaust manifolds, I'm going to assume that by "air" you mean A.I.R. or Air Injection Reactor system. ALL 1968 Corvettes originally used an A.I.R.("smog pump") system. Some manuals and references indicate that 68s with automatic trans didn't use A.I.R. THOSE MANUALS OR REFERENCES ARE INCORRECT. ALL 68 (and 69)Corvettes used this system. The fact that your car currently has the A.I.R.-type manifolds is further evidence that your car had the A.I.R. system. Removal of these systems was a VERY COMMON practice in the "old days" and, even, the "not-so-old" days. That's very likely how your car came to be without its A.I.R. plumbing. If you wish to restore your car to its original and smog-legal configuration, you will need to obtain a replacement system. These are available, but usually don't come cheap. Especially, the original diverter valve component.
As far as your trans installation goes, you're right. Your clutch disc is not lined up exactly correctly, which it must be for the trans to seat properly. I recommend using an old trans input shaft for the alignment and not one of the wooden or plastic tools available from auto stores. These tools usually don't get the alignment EXACTLY right for some reason, and it must be EXACTLY RIGHT. Whatever you do, don't make the mistake of trying to "draw in" the transmission using the 4 mount bolts. Very often, this causes the transmission "ears" to break. Just back from judging field at Zion Regional. SUPER time, place, folks, weather and scenery! Had the pleasure of judging (1) '68 L-79 with A/C and (2) '68 L-88. Joe Lucia feeds you no bull, they had A.I.R. even with/without A/C...- Top

When I referred to air I was assuming air condition. There were no signs of the bracket, etc. except the "v" shaped engine mt shims. I'm assuming that the "smog" system came with (most) all 68. Do these brass plugs signify any relation to my L36 motor/nonair car? Should the replacement exhaust manifolds have these? and are they all supposed to be closed/plugged as they are now? jc- Top
