Is their much difference in looks or major differences in sound between these two types of exhaust? I understand off road has less baffels. Is the sound much deeper in tone?

Re: Off Road Exhaust vs Stock Exhaust
Joe----
There is virtually no difference in appearance and configuration between an ORIGINAL standard exhaust system and an N-11 system. In SERVICE, the standard exhaust was supplied only as seperate muffler and pipes with a bell joint for the connection. SERVICE N-11 systems were sold only as a complete assembly of muffler and rear pipe, which is the configuration used in PRODUCTION for both standard and N-11 systems.
The standard muffler has 3 internal baffle tubes; the N-11 has 2. The N-11 system has about the same sound, just a little bit louder. Not greatly louder, though. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Undercar chambered exhaust which was, of course, never originally used on a Corvette, is MUCH louder than N-11 off-road exhaust and has entirely different sound characteristics. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Off Road Exhaust vs Stock Exhaust
Joe,
I was debating between the two exhaust systems because my car was not an original side exhaust car. However, I would like to keep my car as stock as possible while enhancing the sound a little. Also for judging if I would do so. As much as I like side pipes I would not want to de value my car by making the mods. I am just completing a body off resto and the body is back on the car.

It's also been said that both the OEM chambered side pipes and aftermarket under the car chambered exhaust are more restrictive than the OEM off road exhaust, and that claim is believable.

Paragon can supply the "Off-Road" mufflers, either separately or as a welded assembly (as they were originally), although the reproduction off-road mufflers are said not to sound quite like the originals - very subjective issue.- Top

Re: Off Road Exhaust vs Stock Exhaust
There is not always a direct inverse relationship between noise and restriction. The best exhaust systems have generously sized mandrel bend pipes with large volume mufflers with minimum baffling and flow reversals as far back in the system as possible. This description pretty much sums up the OEM exhaust system and the N-11 system, in particular. Look under any C5 and you will see tha same basic exhaust system architecture.
There have been reports of owners testing Z06s with and without the OEM mufflers and the difference in RWHP is less than ten. Considering that the '02-'03 LS6s average a little over 350 RWHP the difference is less than three percent, which is the difference in power between a 50 degree day and 80 degree day.

Re: Off Road Exhaust vs Stock Exhaust
Joe - I just saw your questions re: off road exhaust. I was in your same shoes last summer. I have a 65 327/365 that I wanted to keep original but enhance the sound, like you. I opted for the off-road exhaust because it's hard to tell from the outside whether or not it's original. I think the sound is deeper and throatier. I like it. I went with Allen's for the pipes and mufflers. Good luck, Henry- Top
