When I reinstall the engine & transmission in my '64, I plan on doing so with them already together, as a unit. Any reason not to do that? Will this work if I have the shifter and linkage attached to the transmission already (with the shift leaver removed)? Or is this just asking for trouble?

Re: Engine Reinstallation
Hi Mark,
As you haven't gotten any responses yet, I figure I'll give you my spin.
When I pulled my 68 apart, I attempted to pull the complete shifter assembly out while the car body was still setting on the frame and the engine/tranny was still in place. It was rude!
I think when I put humpty Dumpty back together, I will have the shifter assembly suspended up under the body and will carefully position and mount it when the body is lowered into place.
Maybe this spur some feed back both posative or negative.

Re: Engine Reinstallation
I have done it as a complete assembly (engine, trans. and shifter) in my 61' 3 times in as many years and haven't had any trouble getting it in or out (the reason for the 3 times is unrealted to that ), I have the entire car up on jack stands and use a hand cranked engine hoist balancer along with a floor jack under the trans. When putting it in, I actually drop the front end of the car down to help get the assembly over the side, then crank the balancer to get the tilt I need. it requires several shifts from 1st to 3rd along the way to allow for clearance etc... but I was able to do it in a 1/2 hour and no help. I hope this translates to your mid year. Good luck...- Top

Re: Engine Reinstallation
Mark,
Go ahead and install the engine and transmission as a unit. You may need a leveler to change the angle of the engine/transmission as you lower it into the car. I would remove the shifter, as you may have a difficult time getting the shifter threaded through the floor opening while jockeying the engine/trans on a hoist. Make sure that you have already adjusted the shifter linkages before you remove the shifter prior to engine/trans installation. It's much easier doing it out of the car. Also make sure that you have tightened the lock nuts on each of the shifter linkage rods so that you don't lose your adjustments. Removing each linkage rod and lever on the transmission as a unit makes it easier to reinstall while under the car (no readjusting necessary).
Good luck.

Re: Engine Reinstallation
Hi, Mark, this is Mark.
I just completed the reinstall of the small block/powerglide in my '65. I'm adding my $.02 because the other responses have been from C1 and C3 cars.
I, too, installed the engine and transmission as a unit, and a leveler is an absolute MUST. If you can't rent one, buy one, they're cheap enough and really worth the cost. I did the same on my '64 Chevelle, and left the shift installed mechanism, but removed the lever. You may be able to do the same on your Corvette.
In the body, I left the core support in place. On the engine, I installed the water and fuel pumps and starter before the install. Also, before bolting up the front motor mounts, I installed the front two plug wires for each side, running them though their "V" shields and plug wire guides that mount underneath the front motor mounts. Mounting these four wires and the shields now will save you a lot of work later on.
It probably goes without saying, but if you fill your transmission prior to the install, put a yoke on the back end of the main shaft to retain the fluid.
E-mail me off-line if I can be of any help. By the way, credit where credit is due: Roy Langlitz, whose dones 100s of removal/installs on Corvettes, helped me with my car.

Re: Engine Reinstallation
Mark,
I agree with the other Mark, the more you can hang on the engine before the drop the better. I've pulled my 283, W/PG, twice now. On my '59 there is the option to not install the fuel pump before engine drop, or install it but remove the passenger side motor mount bracket.( The bracket on the frame.) Now as far as the P/G, engine combo. I installed it once with the shifter attached(the insertion angle will give you white hair) and once with shifter not attached. Took me all day to hang the shifter once the tranny's in place. Remember this was on a '59, hopefully your circumstances will be better. By all means hang heatshields, starter, fuel pump, even exhaust manifold (especially if you use french locks)before engine drop. It's also a good idea to constantly remind yourself, "It's just Hobby" Tom- Top
