68 Corvette C3 Shifter Removal

Hi,

We have the center console out and the boots off. Can someone explain the easiest way from there to remove the shifter from the car.

My recollection is that in the past I've disconnected the shifter from the transmission-mounted shifter levers and pulled the whole thing out from the top. Reverse to re-install. Also, check the through-bolt that goes into the shifter frame bracket for damage. Sometimes this bolt gets damaged, for some reason. If necessary, replace it. It uses the exact same bolt as the small block exhaust manifold long (center) bolts. These are available under GM #3733134, the original part number.

With the exception of the long shifter bolt that can be turned (and removed) from inside the car, I have always removed and installed from underneath the car. If you remove the exhaust mount and the transmission mount you should have plenty of room.
