I am installing the T.I. distributor back onto my LT-1. Do the T.I. distributors require a gasket between the aluminum intake and distributor? I thought I remember reading somewhere that LT-1's with T.I. didn't have one, but I'm not sure. There was one on there when I pulled it, but I wonder if somebody slapped on on somewhere in the car's earlier life. If I do need one, does anybody have a part number for it? Thanks!!

The purpose of that gasket is to keep the oil inside the engine. I can't think of any reason why the aluminum manifold and iron distributor would seal without a gasket. BTW: Mine came with a gasket. Dark (almost black), thick paper, IIRC, but it has been a while since I looked. I'll leave the part numbers to Joe Lucia.

Terry is absolutely correct; ALL 55-91 Corvette small block and big block distributors, breaker point type, TI, and HEI used a gasket between the distributor housing and the intake manifold. 1992-96 Opti-Spark distributors, which mounted on the front of the engine, didn't use a gasket, though. So, if one has a 92-96 LT1, then one doesn't have to worry about a gasket (to R&R this distributor, though, one would wish that all they had to be concerned about was a gasket) .
The distributor-to-manifold gasket is currently GM #10108445 and GM list for $0.92 cents each. These gaskets are supplied as part of intake manifold gasket kits and engine overhaul gasket kits, too.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

That gasket 10108445 is available in packages of 10, so unless one can find a dealer who stocks them (not unlikely given its application), one could easily wind up with a lifetime supply.
Don't knock the new LT1. Just keep the water pump from dripping on the opti-spark, the exhaust manifolds from cracking, the exhaust manifold fasteners from shearing, and the intake manifold from leaking oil, and they are fine motors. BTW: all those problems are easily corrected at some sacrifice in originality. I know folks with in excess of 250K miles on them, and they are still running strong.

Don't get me wrong; I'm not criticizing 92-96 LT1s, in general. They are a great pain to replace distributors, though. A whole lot more work than a 91 or older style small block unit.
In fact, I'm a great fan of the 92-96 (actually, through 97 for Camaros) LT1s. In my opinion, the 1992 LT1 engine was the best looking small block engine EVER installed in a Corvette. In fact, when I saw the first picture of it on the cover of a Motor Trend magazine, I knew right at that instant that I had to have one. A few months later, I ordered a 92 LT1. I still have it. I don't drive it very much anymore, though. But, I still LOVE looking at that engine. And, I LOVE that ZF MN-6 transmission, the heaviest duty, most sophisticated manual transmission ever installed in a Corvette (or, ever likely to be installed in a Corvette).In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
