LT-1 cam

I've been told at two GM Performance sources (a local GM dealership and Paceparts.com) that the LT-1 cam (GM P/N 3972178) has been discontinued. Is this bad info? If not, is there another source, or is there a cross reference # to another manufacturer of an equivalent cam?

You've been told correctly; the GM #3972178 camshaft has "bitten the dust" as far as the GM-sourced part is concerned. I don't know of a reproduction source for this particular camshaft at the present time; neither Crane nor Comp Cams makes this one, although they do make the '151' L-79 cam. But, if there isn't one, I'm sure that there soon will be.

It wouldn't hurt to give Crane a call anyway since a custom ground cam is not significantly more expensive than an off the shelf grind. I only make this recommendation because it's hard to beat an LT-1 cam for all around performance in solid lifter bump sticks and it's a proven performer in many non-LT-1 applications. I wouldn't be surprised to find that they already have the specs and set up for the grind.

An exact duplicate of the LT-1 cam was available from Federal Mogul Performance parts. Old p/n (TRW number) is TP245. My understanding is that this p/n has changed to CS1145R. Use with the edge orifice lifters, which I understand are F-M part number AT840R.

Check with a F-M dealer and verify that this info is correct.

Duke, I verified the CS1145R as the number for the LT1 cam on Federal's site. They have it listed for 68-72. Do you or anyone have the specs (lift, duration, lobe seperation and clearances)? The reasom I'm asking is that Crane makes a blueprinted 71-72 LT1 cam. This same cam is also available through Chevy complete with new solid lifters. I wanted to compare the specs. Thanks, Dan

A couple of questions.

1. What web address do you have for Federal Mogul. All I can find at federalmogul.com is corporate info and very general product descriptions.

2. Do you have a part # for the Crane/Chevy cam?

the specs i have for the 3972182 copy: dur @ .050 242/254, lobe sep 116, valve timing at .050 cam lift; IO 11, IC 51; EO 69, EC 5; lift .459/.485

The GM part number for the 71-2 cam is 12364054. This cam is made by Crane, but mine came in a Goodwrench box with lifters. You can also buy this cam at places like Jegs.

Thanks Clem, that is the same specs I have for the GM #12364054. Mine has the clearances set at .020" I and .025" E hot. Is that the same as the origional 182?

Thanks. I'm not trying to split hairs with you, but this is something that I have been trying to understand for a while. The part number you mentioned ( 12360454) shows up in my GM Performance catalog as a camshaft kit for a cam with Part Number 3972182. That same catalog shows the LT-1 cam to have Part Number 3972178, but it also describes it as ID# 3972182. So, my question is are Part Number 3972178 (the LT-1 cam) and Part Number 397182 (the cam in kit # 12364054) identical? I have been confused for some time by GM having 2 numbers (P/N and ID) for the same part.

The number game would probably be best explained by Joe Lucia. The 12364054 cam kit that I got has the same specs that Clem gave me on this thread. The only difference is that the cam card that came with the kit, has you setting the clearances at .020/.025 instead of the .024/.030 on the origional. If you get the GM 12364054, you won't be dissapointed.

Steve,I'm guessing here but I think that the 178 # is the part #. The 182 is the number cast into the cam.
