    1963 Transmission Tunnel Insulation

Do early 63 have the transmission tunnel insulation? I'm restoring my early 63 midyear and couldn't find any of the rivet holes or places where the retainer clips were. I also couldn't find it in the assembly manual. I'm wondering if this was one of those things they added later in the production cycle of 63...anyone know??

    Many thanks!

As far as I know, the tunnel insulator, GM #3834984, was used from the outset of production. However, if after careful inspection you find no evidence of the retainers, then I'd say that yours never had one. The retainers were attached to the underbody by aluminum rivets. So, even if the retainers were long gone, the rivet holes should still be there. No holes= no retainers=no insulation ever used on your car.

It started December 1, 1962. This is around serial number 104100 (or car number 4,100).

Look at AIM sect 1 sheet A31.00. Unfortunately the early change record was lost when the sheet was revised in May, but Gary knows the production change time frame when the insulation started being installed on the line.

How'd you figure that one out, Gary?

Thanks Gary. Not sure how or where you found this, I couldn't find it in the judging manual if it's there. My car was built 1st week of Nov, 1962 so that makes sense.

          Thanks Fellas!!

          Have a good weekend!

My reference was Nolan Adams restoration guide book. It is on page 67.

TSB #855 dated 1/11/63 states that the

insulation was installed effective December 1, 1962.
