    C2 63 Amp Gauge

I get the bonehead award for this one, but a little help is needed. I was using a small extension mirror to look at the fuel pump. While doing so, the end of the extension touched in the vicinity of the voltage regulator and generated a few sparks. Now, when I start the car, every other start, the needle on the amp gauge points straight down. Then every other start it looks to be working normal at +20. What did I fry?

    Thanks

Additional info. I hit the horn relay, I can see the marks, and that is not working all that well either.

It really depends on what touched what up at the regulator, and if the system is moving the needle out of range is it overcharging or showing heavy drain? Are there any signs of burnt wires in the area of the regulator? If nothing obvious, Start with the key off and look at the amp gauge. Does it zero out in a normal position? If so, turn the key to on, not cranking the engine, and watching the amp gauge. It should move slightly to the discharge side. If ok, turn on headlamps, heater blower, and step on the brakes. You should see about a 20 amp discharge under this condition, with engine off and all these items running. If that is all normal, (repeat it a few times to verify) then look at the charging system, regulator and alternator. If you have a Motors manual from the mid-60's they have an easy process for checking the alternator bypassing the regulator. If the alt checks OK, move to the regulator and follow the process there. If you need the instructions for checking the alt and Voltage regulator, email me and I'll scan you a copy.

With the key off it looks OK. With the key to on and the headlights on the amp gauge pegged negative and stayed there, even with the battery disconnected. Looks like I fried the amp gauge. Bill, I send you my e-mail address via an e-mail to you.

        Thank You
