another windshield install john fulton has anybody else tried to replace the windshield gasket and been told that the urethane from a previous install had hardened to the point that the chrome trim would have to be bent and for all practical purposes destroyed requiring it to be replaced i have checked that looks like about bucks to replace

Re: Another Windshield install ? (65)
re another windshield install gary schisler after i almost ruined my lower stainless trim for my convertible trying to remove it without knowing how it was installed i watched very carefully when i had my new windshield put it there is a very special trim tool that these window shops use to remove the molding carefully it is a very thin blade with two special hooks on it to catch and release mid year style molding clips the installer told me that these were readily available at any good auto parts store i will certainly buy one before i try some proven back yard remedy by the way the lower convertible molding is not available through a reproduction source you will have to find one on the used parts market- Top

Re: Another Windshield install ? (65)
re another windshield install tom buddie i replaced the windshield on my roadster and used a sealer possibly urethane when i tried to re install the molding i slightly damaged it i removed it and spent many hours getting it back into shape and tried again i could not get the molding to snap onto the clips up until now i thought by sandblasting buffing and painting the clips that i had made the clip edges to rounded to retain the molding but now i'm beginning to think that the urethane is preventing me from pushing the seal down far enough to allow the molding to snap onto the clips i used an xacto knife to cut the urethane out around the clip but i still cannot install the molding so it appears there is some truth in the rumor that gobs of urethane will make a great seal but will prevent the molding from being installed that's my guess probably have to remove the windshield and start over ps this also implies that once the molding is installed hardened urethane will make it nearly impossible to release the clips i would guess however that if you knew exactly where the clips are located and how they release you might have a chance of getting under the molding to release them without severely damaging the trim you can locate the clips by greasing a very stiff flat thin instrument and sliding it along under the molding if it's far enough under it will hang up on each clip you should get a hold of an extra clip to see exactly how they must be pressed to release also the assembly manual available from parts suppliers will give you an idea of how things look underneath the molding- Top

Re: Another Windshield install ? (65)
re another windshield install gary schisler i replaced my windshield weather strip about one month ago i ran into these two problems just like you first i wasn't sure how the windshield was held in i finally figured out that if you use a sharp razor knife you can cut away the outer rubber weather strip that which is visible when standing outside the car i then carefully cut as much of the rubber away from the the window perimeter i had to do this a couple of times but eventually the windshield just lifted out once i had my new rubber weather strip in place i put in the windshield however i couln't get the lower stainless trim in place no matter what i tried i had put just a thin line of black rubber silicone under the weather stripping that was just enough to not allow the trim to be grabbed by the new clips i should have fit the stainless trim first with the rubber weather strip in place but no windshield to see if the trim would fit i eventually pulled the windshield back out cleaned up the new weather strip cleaned up the frame and put it all back together again to get allow the new clips to get a grip on the trim i had to massage the weather strip into position basically pushing up from the bottom into the center of the windshield it took thirty minutes of massaging before i could get the trim in place apparently each little push from the massaging move the weather strip just a hair it was lots of fun not- Top
