    Roy,
This would indicate a too lean an idle mixture. First place I would look is a bad vaccuum leak! Knowing your tastes tend to run toward Powerglide cars like me, Don't forget to check the vaccuum modulator for a leak.

John ! Now we do like powerglide vetts , just lazy I think. But I do have a 67 4 speed that I drive only on mornings before I get tired. It's my son-in-laws 69 vett. He put a rebuilt carb on pep-boys and it idels bad , but when I put my hand over it she runs nice.

Your cupped hand is restricting air flow, making it run ricer, which is what it sounds like it wants. Therefore, without your hand, it is running too lean. Either it's adjusted too lean, or it's got a vacuum leak somewhere.

              One More Thing

If the carb backfires while your hand is there, you won't be happy. And it may want to backfire, seeing as how something's wrong with it, and you're fiddling with it.
