Re: C1 Steering
Since the worm and sector gears out of a 49 to 54 chevy will interchange(after shortening the steering wheel shaft) in a C-1 steering gear box, i Suspect the 49 to 54 steering gear box will fit a c-1 frame but haven't tried the swap. I have a 49-54 steering gear box that is yours for the taking but you or someone else will have to come and get it. Cumberland, md, half way between pittsburg and baltimore. mike- Top

Re: C1 Steering
The 49-54 passenger car steering box/column are basically the same as a Vette, but there are some important differences. The 49-52 box had Bushings for the sector shaft. The 53-4 box had caged roller bearings and they were the SAME caged roller bearings as the Vette box (thus, 49-52 and 53-4 pass car sector shafts were different). You COULD use the worm and sector from a 53-4, but the ratio is just a tiny different. If I remember correctly, the Vette ratio is 20:1 and the passenger car is 21:1. Thus, you would need to pull the worm gear off of the 53-4 steering shaft and press it onto the Vette shaft and then use BOTH the worm and sector from the pass car box. The steering shafts are different lengths between car and Vette, and, the 53-57 and 58-62 Vette shafts are different lengths from each other.
And here is one last thing to consider. The splines on the sector shafts are all the same except for just one. One spline is wider than the rest, for the purpose of locating the steering arm in the correct position. This one wide spline may or may not be in the same relative position between the pass car and Vette sector shafts, you will just have to compare them side by side.
And also, there is a rebuild kit available which contains everything----------------------------------and yes, I know, it is kind of expensive.- Top
