I have two harmonic balancers, one is a typical stock low hp 283" that is about 6-1/8" in diameter and thin. The other is about 6-3/4" diameter and about 1-1/8" thick. If I use the larger balancer with the appropriate front cover, will I cause any damage to the 283CI engine? The larger balancer might be off a 283 or 327 truck engine. Looking forward to the responses, John.

Re: Why not just use the right one?

I don't think that the thicker balancer will cause any engine problems. However, this balancer will be designed and tuned for different operating parameters than the one designed for use with your car. It's very unlikley that it will represent any improvement over the stock balancer.
What using this balancer WILL do is to require modification of your pulley system for it to be adapted to use on your car. This sort of thing often begets a "cascade of other problems" that are better to stay away from. I'd recommend using the original configuration balancer. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
